Message from Melrose High School Principal Marianne Farrell and Police Chief Michael Lyle

The following message has just been sent to the parents of Melrose High School students.

Dear Melrose School Community,

With great sadness I report that at approximately 5:30 p.m. this evening, Melrose police and fire departments responded to a report of a young man being struck by the MBTA commuter train near the Lynn Fells Parkway overpass on Tremont St. Due to the ongoing investigation and notification to family, the authorities cannot provide additional information or an identity at this time. We must respect the process and we ask all citizens to do the same.

We are sharing this information because we realize there is speculation on social media regarding the identity of the individual. In this tragedy, it is important to allow the police and the Massachusetts coroner’s office to identify the individual and ensure that the family and relatives are notified first. We thank you for your cooperation during this very difficult time.
