Last year I proposed, and the Board of Aldermen approved, the continued renovation of Melrose High School. As I said in my Inaugural Address, this will further enhance the experience and offerings at our flagship school, and it is part of our ongoing effort to reshape Melrose High School to become a more effective and efficient learning facility.
I am happy to say that our current major project is on schedule and on budget, and I have some photos of the work in progress to share with you today.
Phase I construction, which includes the Learning Commons and classrooms in the mezzanine space above (Computer Lab, CAD Lab, Business Lab, TV Studio), is well underway. Demolition is nearly complete. The students and faculty have been very accommodating while this work is going on, particularly the administrative staff who work directly below the construction zone!!
Current work includes installing metal stud partitions (which frame the different spaces) and installing overhead electrical, fire protection and mechanical systems while the space is wide open.
Phase I work is tracking on schedule. Phase II work on the first floor, including the guidance department and directors’ suite, is scheduled for the summer months when school is out of session. At this time, the team is confident that the project will be substantially complete by the first day of the 2016-17 school year.
