Portions of Melrose Common Playground Closed Monday and Tuesday for Repairs

The Melrose Common Playground 2-5 year old section will be closed Monday 10/3/2016 and will reopen on Wednesday 10/5/16 in order to complete repairs to the rubber surfacing.

As a reminder, all outside toys should stay in the cemented track area. When toddler buggies and cars enter the area with the playground equipment they could cause injury in the safety fall zones around the equipment. It can also rip and tear the new rubberized surface.

4th Annual Swap Day on October 1


Swap Day is a community reuse event which provides an opportunity to save reusable items from the trash and give them a new life and a new home. Melrose’s 4th Annual Swap Day is on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the parking lot behind City Hall (562 Main Street). Please enter the parking lot in between Memorial Hall and the Fire Station.

This year the event will be run by the Department of Public Works and the Recycling Committee, in collaboration with Birth to Five, and the Pedestrian & Bicycle Committee, which will be collecting and redistributing bicycles at Swap Day this year.

You don’t have to bring something to take something. All items must be clean, gently used, working, complete, and able to be carried by one person. Items will be inspected and approved before they are eligible to be swapped.

Acceptable items: Bicycles, textiles, shoes, books, CDs, DVDs, sports equipment, school/office supplies, small furniture (not upholstered), small electronics and home décor.

Not acceptable items: large electronics (TVs, monitors), large appliances, metal goods, large or upholstered furniture, outdoor or motorized toys.

Swap Day is an event to benefit the community; please don’t take items for the purpose of resale. All items not swapped will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters and Bikes Not Bombs.

Today at the Farmers’ Market: Tai Chi Lesson and Herb Walk


Don’t miss two very special events at this week’s Sally Frank’s Farmers’ Market!

A Tai Chi demonstration starting at 3 p.m. – Susan Becker and her class will give a demonstration. At 3:30, she will provide a free class to anyone who would like to participate.

The other event is at 5 p.m. – Steph Zabel of Flowerfolk Herb will lead an herb walk starting at the farmers’ market. She will take you around the area close to the park to talk about the herbs that are beneath your feet. We’re limiting the group to 12 people – you can sign up ahead of time here.

The farmers’ market is now on fall hours: 2-6 p.m. until the end of October.

Destination Imagination’s Improv Nights on Sept. 28, Oct. 5 & 11

The Melrose chapter of Destination Imagination is now taking registrations for K-12 teams and Team Managers for the 2016-2017 tournament season.

Groups of 2-7 kids of similar age form a team, choose a Central Challenge, and work collaboratively over a period of a few months on solutions to that challenge. Teams also practice “Instant Challenges” to learn quick thinking and teamwork. Teams then present their technical and theatrical solutions at a regional DI tournament in March. Winning teams go on to showcase their work at a State tournament.

The hallmark of DI is “no interference.” Kids work completely independently on creative ideas and trial-and-error solutions to challenges. Parents do not assist with costumes, props, scripts, or ideas.

“Kids aren’t looking to adults and saying ‘should we do this?’ but rather looking to each other and saying ‘Okay, how can we do this?’” says Kate Cable Murphy, DI Team Manager from the 2015/16 season. “My favorite thing is seeing how proud the kids are because they can look at their creations and know that they alone are the ones who thought of it, designed it, and built it. Everything they bring forward is entirely their own.”

Melrose DI will host several free “Improv Nights” for kids and parents to try out the program, ask questions, and potentially partner up with other parents and kids interested in forming a DI team for this season. Interested kids and parents are encouraged to attend all to get a full picture of the program.

Melrose Council on Aging and Police Department to Host Event for Seniors on Community Resources

Dawn Folopoulos, Executive Director of the Melrose Council on Aging, and Chief Michael L. Lyle are pleased to announce that the Council on Aging, in collaboration with the police department, will host an event for seniors on local and state resources later this month.

The meeting will be held at the Milano Senior Center, 201 West Foster St., on Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 6-8 p.m. The event coincides with the police department’s community meetings initiative, which resumes this month after a summer hiatus.

Folopoulos, along with Chief Lyle, Detective Dan Ehlers, and a representative from Mystic Valley Elder Services, will provide information to attendees on available resources for seniors in Melrose and throughout the region. This includes events, activities, health clinics, low-income assistance, home care options, caregiver support and more. Chief Lyle will also give an overview of the 911 system.

“We want our seniors to be assured that if there is an emergency while they’re at home or out, to always dial 911,” Chief Lyle said. “No one situation is the same for any person and residents should not hesitate to contact police or first responders by calling 911. We are here to help.”

This event is part of the police department’s monthly community meetings initiative, where police and other city and state officials gather to discuss a prevalent topic with residents. The meetings were briefly paused during the summer months, but will now occur on the last Wednesday of every month.
